Who wore these?  And when and where were they worn?

This looks like half of a Bulgarian style belt buckle meant for married women to ward off evil and, specifically, to protect their reproductive organs. It is difficult to gauge how old the piece is from the picture, but these rather large buckles have been a traditional female costume dress piece since at least the 800 A.D. during the Second Bulgarian kingdom.
