Picture

We love to watch historical films as well as old films from the past.

Here we share with you some of our favorites.  We hope you'll share with us some of your favorites so we can spread the word.

Documentary: Shtetl

Picture
A Polish American Holocaust survivor and his American Jewish colleague journey to a shtetl in Poland.  There they meet with a young Polish Gentile who is dedicated to finding the lost Jewish history of the village.

Their encounters with the current inhabitants of the village shed light on the lasting legacy of the Holocaust.

Feature Film: The Wind That Shakes the Barley

Picture
Ken Loach's film of the civil war in Ireland during the 1920s demonstrates how this war tore families and friends apart.

Stick with it although the dialect and accents may be a bit difficult at first.  It's well worth it!

Television: Boardwalk Empire

What's not to love?

Prohibition, gangsters, and yes, the clothes.

A fantastic show and a wonderful introduction to an incredible period in American history.

From the Vaults: The Best Years of Our Lives

Picture
Winner of seven Academy Awards.

We aren't sure how this film---which graphically depicts the struggles of three veterans who return to their hometowns after World War II----ever slipped past the censors of the 1940s.

An incredible film---as powerful a commentary on war today as it was in 1946.
